Students take a placement examination in eighth grade prior to enrollment.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin. Current ratio: 4% African American; 8% Hispanic; 8% Asian; 80% Caucasian; .5% Native American; .2% Pacific Islander.

The Faculty: The Kapaun Mt. Carmel faculty consists of 63 faculty members and an 18 member support staff for a total of 81 employees. The faculty includes two Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary who teach full time in the Religion Department. A full time priest teaches, serves as Chaplain, and provides sacramental ministries to the students. All students take Religion classes each semester and are exposed to numerous opportunities for fully integrating their academic and spiritual experiences.

 

Accreditation: KMC is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the State of Kansas, and the National Catholic Education Association. Institutional membership is held in the Naitonal Association of College Counselors and many other professional organizations.

 

Schedule: Classes meet for 90 minutes on an A/B schedule. On the A schedule, blocks 1,2,3,4 meet. On the B schedule, classes 5,6,7,8 meet. One week the schedule will be A,B,A,B,A. The next week it is B,A,B,A,B. Classes meet 18 weeks per semester.

Curriculum: English. World Language (French, Latin and Spanish), Mathematics. Social Science. Science. Religion. Journalism & Photography. Fine and Graphic Arts. Vocal Music. Business. Home Economics. Speech. Debate. Computer Science. and Physical Education. The St. Gianna Catholic Health Care Academy, off-site, is available for students wishign to pursue careers in the medical field.

Requirements: Kapaun Mt. Carmel's policy is that students must successfully complete all required courses including those in the Religion Department.

Twenty-eight Carnegie units are required for graduation including: 4 units English (exclusive of oral communication classes), 3 units Mathematics, 3 units Social Science (including 1 1/2 units of American History, 1/2 unit American Government, 1 unit World History), 3 Natural Sciences (including 1 lab course), 4 units Religion, 1 unit Physical Education, .5 unit of Computer Science, 1 unit Fine Arts, 1 unit World Language and .5 units Communications.

Honors: All Honors courses are designated on the student's transcript by the letter "H." Accelerated courses in elective subjects are also available. Both offer enriched and challenging academic programs.

Eight classes have been designated Advanced Placement classes on the transcript: AP English IV, AP U.S. History II, AP Calculus I, AP Calculus II, AP Chemistry II, AP Physics C, AP French IV and AP Spanish IV.

In 2010, 92 AP tests were administered to KMC students, 63 scored 3 or higher.

College credit is awarded for 11 classes: AP U.S. History II, AP Calculus I, AP Calculus II, AP French IV, AP English IV, AP Spanish IV, Statistics, College Algebra, College Psychology, and AP Chemistry II, College Sociology. 

Grading Policies and Procedures: Grading periods occur every nine weeks, but the transcript records only semester grades. Grade point averages and class rank are computed on all subjects taken. The grading scale is shown on the transcript.
