History of KMC

Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School is a four-year co-educational Catholic secondary school situated in a residential area of east Wichita, a community of more than 375,000.

Two schools were consolidated in 1971: Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School, a Jesuit preparatory school for young men established in 1956 and Mount Carmel Academy, a preparatory school for young women established in 1886 under the guidance of the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Kapaun Mt. Carmel is accredited by North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, the State of Kansas and the National Catholic Education Association. Institutional membership is held in the National Association of College Admissions Counselors and many professional organizations.

The School is named in honor of both our Blessed Mother, as she was revealed at Mount Carmel, and also Father Emil Kapaun, a priest of the Diocese of Wichita, KS until his death on May, 23, 1951.  For more information about Father Kapaun, please click here to read about how one person can impact so many other people.
